Winter Games
Japan, February 2022
“I’m scared,” I admit softly, so softly I’m not even sure Zane can hear me.
He smooths a strand of hair behind my ear, his lips pressing against the
side of my head. “That’s normal. Tomorrow is a big day.”
I turn around, placing my hands over his warm pecs. Those bright green
eyes of his look at me intently. God, he’s even more gorgeous now than he
was last year when I first met him.
“I don’t think I can do it,” I confess.
I never said it out loud up until this point, but now that the words are out
in the open, for the first time I feel like the pressure has been lifted from my
chest.
The last year has been… intense. There’s no other way of putting it. I
lived and breathed figure skating almost twenty-four/seven. There was
always something that needed to be achieved. Another thing to be crossed
off a list.
Quad loop.
U.S. Nationals.
Quad Salchow.
Four Continents.
Quad Lutz.
World Championships.
Quad flip.
Winter Games qualifications.
Quad Axel.
Axel. Axel. Axel.
Fall after fall after fall.
The only place I’ve been at more than the rink is probably the doctor’s
office. I had a scare during that short time in summer between the seasons
when I was practicing the quad Axel, and I fell wrong. For a moment we
were scared that I might have broken my ankle, but thankfully it was only
twisted. The injury messed up my schedule, but I was grateful I wouldn’t be
out for the season. That would mean kissing the dream of making it to the
Winter Games goodbye.
Zane cups my face, his thumb swiping over my cheekbone. He stares at
me for a while, not saying a word, until finally, “You’re going to make it.”
“How can you be so sure?”
Zane has been the one to hold me together and push me forward when I
thought there was nothing else left inside me. He didn’t doubt me, not even
for a second.
“Because I know you.” He brushes his lips against mine. Slowly.
Sweetly. “But no matter what happens out there on that ice tomorrow, win
or lose, Axel or no Axel, you’re still going to be the most magnificent
woman I’ve ever met.”
I brush away a tear that rolled down my cheek. “You’re making me
cry.”
“Listen to me, will you?”
I sniffle, but nod my head. “When you get out there tomorrow, I want
you to have fun.”
I open my mouth, but before I can speak, Zane kisses me, effectively
shutting me up. “I know what that douche will tell you, but I’m telling you
this. Go out there and have fun. You deserv
e it. Isn’t that what you told
me?”
“What?” I ask, confused. We talked a lot over the past year. About
skating, but also about life in general. About the future. Our future.
“When I asked you about keeping score, you told me the score doesn’t
matter, because for those few minutes on the ice you just get to do what you
love. So tomorrow, I want you to do the sport you love, on the ice where
your mother skated.”
