I woke up in a forest far from the pines of South Georgia. The trees were
larger than any I had ever seen, easily as big around as ten live oaks and
towering far, far above me. Their lush, needled branches were laden with
snow. The ground beneath them was thickly covered. More snow fell every
second, adding to the powdery blanket. The sun, covered mostly by clouds,
illuminated a game trail. With nothing better to do, I followed the trail.
I barely made it twenty steps before I sank waist deep in the snow. I was in
decent shape. Having spent my life working on a farm, I had plenty of
muscle and endurance, and my long legs should have been enough to help
me handle the snow. With a frustrated sigh, I climbed out of the snow, angry
at being subjected to such discomfort while I should have been sound
asleep.
I was in another dream world. Magic swirled everywhere, building the
trees, forming the snow, lighting the sun above my head. I called on what
magic I could. It was much harder than it normally was. The last time I was
pulled into a dream, a goddess tried to kill me. This didn’t feel like the
power of the Red Mare, but that was no reason not to be wary.
“You have nothing to fear from me, Alex.”
I whirled around, searching for the source of the voice. Like Áine Chlair’s
voice had, the unknown speaker’s voice tantalized me. It sent a shiver down
my back. Even as I searched for its source, I wanted to hear it again.
“You cannot see me. I am trapped here beneath the foot of a tyrant.”
The voice didn’t feel dangerous, just sad. “Who are you?”
“My name is Annie. You are the first man I have spoken to in centuries.”
The way she said “man” warmed my cheeks. I knew it was probably magic.
A single word by a voice whose owner I could not see should not be able to
have that effect on me, especially with no context. I don’t have the greatest
luck romantically, but even I’m not that easy.
“Why are you hiding from me? Did you bring me here?” I asked.
I felt a smile in her reply. “Yes, I brought you here. It took all the power that
I’ve been saving.”
The snowfall grew heavier. Gray clouds billowed overhead, blocking out
more of the sun. “I’m here. Show yourself.”
A gust of wind blew through the trees, making the evergreen needles
tremble on their branches. Sadness. Loneliness. She was in pain. “I am too
weak. My essence is strained. I am little more than a whisper.”
The way she spoke… She needed me. Needed my help. “You are
bewitching me.”
More snow fell, faster now. I could only see a few of the trees. “I need your
help, Alex. I need you to set me free.”
Compulsion laced her words. I unraveled the spell. The magic faded to
nothing. “Release me from here.”
