A groaned and crashed on the rocks below Seren, misting her
with cool drops that awakened goosebumps on her bare arms, before
it foamed and eddied into the next grounding wave. Salty air laden
with the scents of seaweed and fish entered her lungs until she released her
breath with a smile. Another wave rumbled toward the rocks, and behind it
the crest of another formed as the water tumbled over itself, and after it
countless others would lumber landward before bashing into the rocks in a
never-ending, rising and ebbing moan. At least something in this world was
dependable. She gazed south at Crag Isle, a dark mass of rock jutting out of
Culvor Sound some three furlongs away. “Ready, losers?”
On her right, Len grinned. “You might not win this time. Tob’s been
practicing. Haven’t you?” He elbowed the other boy on his ribs and winked
at him.

Tob rolled his eyes. “What’s the point, anyway? We already know she’ll
win.”
Seren put her hands on her hips. “You’ll never get anywhere thinking
that way.”
Tob shrugged. “Don’t want to get nowhere. I’ll stay here and guard the
fish while you two race.”

Len scoffed. “Not so fast. I need you so I won’t come in last.”
“The fish will keep just fine. No one’s coming here to bother them,”
said Seren. She nodded at her two friends. “Now, are you two ready?”
Tob let out a long sigh. “Fine.” He took off his shirt, exposing his
stocky chest. Len, all skin and bone, followed suit. Both boys bundled their
shirts and tossed them next to the cordwain shoes, nets, and three baskets of
fish they had stowed behind a large rock.

Seren smiled at them. “Losers carry the winner’s basket and . . .”
Tob held up a palm. “No need to say the rules. We know.”
“I have to keep you two honest.”
Len’s eyebrows shot up. “Keep us honest? You’re the one who tricks us
into carrying your basket every week.”
“Not a trick. It’s a fair contest.”

“That you always win.” Tob’s shoulders slumped forward.
“Fine. Tell you what: This time I’ll give you a head start. I’ll wait and
count to ten after you jump in.”
“How do we know you’ll count all the way to ten?” Len squinted at her
and frowned.
“You can’t count that high anyway, so you’ll just have to trust me.
Besides, if I don’t jump in with you two clods, I’ll have to wait for the next
wave, won’t I?”
“In that case,” Len spat in his hand and held it out to Seren, “challenge
accepted.”

Tob shrugged. “Alright. I guess.”
Seren grinned at the pair of them and grasped Len’s hand before
shaking it.

Len returned her smile. “I’ll enjoy watching you carry my basket and
gear for a change.”
“Not a chance.”
“Easy to talk. Prove it.” wave
