FORTRESS HEDRA
I stand on the gilded balcony, dressed in nothing but dark underlace and a
matching tiara. Sweat slicks my palms, my nape. Icy wind whips at my
long golden hair, flinging it into my burning eyes and tear-soaked cheeks.
Everything aches. The force of the cold is almost crippling as I swing one
leg over the side of the metal railing and prepare to jump.
A flurry of snowfall bombards the world below, covering everything—
the pines, the hills, the glittering castle walls. It’s bright against the night
sky. Obtrusive. The only thing that hasn’t been consumed by it is the pond
underneath my balcony, but even without the ice or snow on top, I know the
water’s deadly. The drop alone might kill me. But then again, that’s kind of
the point.
You can do this, Ezrah. Just let go.
It hurts to breathe, like there’s a boulder crushing my chest. My heart
roars as I reach for the black tiara stuck to my braided coronet and yank it
free. Golden threads come with it—not hair anymore, but solid metal. I
fling the crown into the pond. It splashes as it lands, but the noise gets lost
over the whistling wind, the howling wolves from the forest surrounding
Fortress Hedra. Black waters consume the metal band in an instant, ripples
fading as quickly as they appear.
Me next. My numb fingers tighten on the gilded rail, refusing to
cooperate. Fucking do it already.
“Ezrah, what in Daliah’s name are you doing out there?” My husband’s
smug and callous voice comes from the open doorway. He steps onto the
balcony, wearing nothing but a black towel around his hips.
Water drips from Malin’s curly undercut, the dark strands turning stiff as
the wind hits him. He doesn’t shiver or wrap his arms around himself.
Instead, he leans against the palace walls and assesses my own scantily clad
figure.
A cruel smile twists his lips, his eyes landing on my breasts. “Mmmm.
Black’s a good color on you.”
My cheeks heat at the words. At how cheap they make me feel. At the
way my body responds when it’s been made to feel that way. Years of
training got me to this point, transformed me into the perfect plaything for a
man like Malin Varuz.
My nipples brush against the underlace that he’s forced me to wear,
forming stiff peaks through the sad excuse for a nightgown. It’s the push I
need to swing my other leg over the railing.
Spitting the hair from my mouth, I grip the palisade so hard, my
knuckles turn white.
“I’m a necromancer, Ezrah,” he says. “If you jump, I’ll bring you back
as a construct and you’ll have no choice but to obey me. It’s better you
submit now by choice rather than later by force.”
It’s not a matter of can he do that. I know he can. Malin is one of the
greatest mages in Ranada, his talents almost on par with my father’s. If he
weren’t, I wouldn’t be here right now, his hand-picked prize for sparing our
