I stalked into the grand ballroom, my shoulders back, my head held
high, my nose stuck firmly in the air.
Just inside the entrance, a mousy woman sitting behind a desk looked
up at me and cleared her throat nervously. “May I have your ticket, please,
ma’am?”
I rounded on her. “Fuck off,” I snarled. “Don’t you know who I am?”
She went pale. “I’m sorry, ma’am. This is an invitation-only charity
function.” She stood and held up her hands, trying to placate me. “I’m just
doing my job.”
“I don’t give a shit what you’re doing. Get out of my way!”
The woman swallowed, and blinked back tears. “If you don’t have a
ticket, I’m sure we can arrange something for you. If you could just–”
I shoved her, hard. “Move, you raggedy bitch!” She fell sideways into a
flower archway and let out a cry of shock and pain. She sounded like she
was hurt.

I didn’t even look back. I stomped into the ballroom, my dark eyes
flashing around the room, staring at everyone there with a smug smile on
my face.
Isobel saw me, and froze. Her face went white. She looked terrified, and
I laughed out loud when I saw her expression.
Slowly, tentatively, she approached me. “Prue? What are you doing
here?”
I sneered at her. “There you are, Fatty.” An evil smile pulled at my lips.
“I’ve been looking for you. I was wondering where you were hiding.”
“I– I– I wasn’t hiding.”

I let out a loud bark of laughter. “It’s a miracle you can hide behind
anything, considering your considerable girth.”
She mouthed for a second. “Prue… Why–”
“I’ve come to ruin your life, of course.” I tilted my head, sneering at
her. “Ever since I heard about how much work you’ve put into this little
party of yours, of course I had to find a way to ruin it.”
“But… it’s not a party. It’s not my party, Prue. This is for charity,”
Isobel stuttered, looking absolutely terrified. “We’re raising money for
research into early-onset dementia. It’s… you know… because of Mom…”
She trailed off, and clenched her fists. “Look,” she said, obviously trying to
be brave. “I just want to help people, okay?”

“Ha! You’re full of shit. Don’t lie. You don’t want to help people; you
just want people to like you. And nobody likes you, Fatty,” I laughed. “Even
if you put on these functions and raise lots of money and cure some shitty
disease, nobody is ever going to like you. You’ll never be anyone’s
favorite.” I looked her up and down and let out another chuckle. “You look
like a pig wearing lipstick. Oink, oink.”

People were watching us. Everybody was staring. A beautiful couple on
the edge of the dance floor giggled behind their hands.
Isobel’s face trembled. A tear ran down her cheek, cutting a clean
swathe through her subtle makeup. “Prue… Please,” she whispered
desperately. “Please don’t ruin this for me.”
