FIRST OF MY KID
I CAME TO, a stinging sensation in my eyes. I tried to lift my eyelids, but they
were stuck together. I reached out with my hands, but my movement was
blocked by the resistance of some dense medium. As my body struggled to
cooperate, I began imagining my slow descent into viscous ooze, crushed
by all the weight coming from above. I panicked, twitching and breathing
feverishly until I finally calmed down. I could breathe, so that must mean I
had been placed in a medical capsule. The thick, slimy fluid that was
preventing me from moving was the regular biogel.
But what had happened? How did I get here? Only those with mortal
wounds were placed in medical capsules; others were treated easily using
portable devices.

I strained my memory to make sense of what was going on, but only
managed to trigger an agonizing migraine. I winced, trying to recall where I
had been before now. Vague images flashed before my closed eyes:
flickering lights, strange symbols. I could hear cries and the murmur of
plasma rounds being fired. There had been a blinding light. The slideshow
of images was fuzzy, not real, like fragments of a half-forgotten dream.
The one thing I could clearly remember was that it had happened in a
cave on Mars. I had been there with Haez, Voloshin, Ramirez, and Kwon.
We had spent two weeks guarding the First Martian Company’s research
team. And nothing else. I could scroll through my memories only as far as
the moment when I had been speaking with Joanna, who had been bored
stupid on the surface with nothing to do, then Professor Lee had called me
and… after that, it was all a blur.

I squeezed my eyelids shut as if I were trying to squeeze something
else, anything, from the depths of my consciousness. It was then that
strange three-dimensional runes or some kind of hieroglyph flashed in the
darkness before my eyelids. When I focused on them, I realized that they
were not just moving chaotically but constantly transforming, changing
shape and color, flashing brightly before fading again to barely discernible
outlines.

With my eyes closed, lying there in that dark biogel from the medical
capsule, I could do nothing but observe. My eyes seemed to adjust slightly,
and it now seemed that the symbols were darting around at arm’s length,
reminiscent of textual notifications on augmented-reality glasses.
In my boredom I tried to find meaning in the movement of the
symbols, but they moved too haphazardly, and I had no luck. Instead, I
followed one symbol that looked like a scarab beetle.

This symbol barely
changed shape, its color shifting from dark gray to bright yellow, from pink
to purple. The scarab’s legs became longer, then shorter, then they
bifurcated, making the symbol appear like some kind of colorful snowflake.
I was tired and couldn’t understand it. I blacked out.
