The moment Adeline’s phone reminded her it was Tuesday again,
she sent it soaring across the room. The satisfying clink as it hit
the wall brought a smile to her face, widened by the clang as it crashed to
the floor. The clunk of pieces scattering onto her hardwood floor drew a
snicker. At the very least, it motivated her to get out of bed.
She stood, and the act of standing brought her to her knees.
She squeezed her eyes shut, pressing fingers to her temples to combat
her throbbing head. An errant light pulsed behind her right eye. Focusing
steadily on her breath, Adeline struggled through the intense pain until it
lessened into a dull, bodily sensation she knew would aggravate her all day.
A white flare on the side of her vision, a tiny buzz inside her ear, the
light touch of cloth on her skin.
Just another Tuesday.

Pulling herself back onto the mattress, she reached for a small cobalt
bottle on the nightstand. Removing the lid, she brought it to her nose and
inhaled, then dabbed the oil inside onto her fingertips and swiped behind
each ear as sheer will compelled her to soften her shoulders and eye
creases.
“I’ve only been awake five minutes. I hate this day so much.” She
turned toward the sensation of the mattress shifting next to her, meeting the
indifferent, charcoal eyes watching her. “And how did you sleep,
Minneaux?”
The cat cocked her head toward Adeline’s voice, then lifted her
haunches in a deep stretch. She jumped, her lithe form landing silently on
the floor as her feet padded toward the kitchen.
“There’s no food in your bowl, you amazing bitch.”
Using the interaction as a bolster, Adeline rose to take on the day.
S what to wear by now. Despite the calendar’s claim that it was
spring, the days already leaned toward summer and humidity hung, thick
and heavy, in the air. She kept her arms bare in a flowing shirt, boasting the
deep hue of a raspberry. It wrapped itself around her waist like a hug. A soft
charcoal skirt clung to her legs, stopping just above her ankles.
Muted colors. Strong. He liked them.

She worked a comb through the waves in her raven hair, removing knots
but leaving it untamed. She studied herself in the mirror, noting that her
normally bright sapphire eyes were flat. The golden-brown skin
surrounding them was puffy and strained. Although not her normal way, she
applied makeup — mascara, a hint of color in the shadow, pleasing plum
lipstick — enough to give her face life but not so much she would have to
reapply all day.

She spread white cream across her high-boned cheeks, forehead, nose
and chin, relaxing as the earthy sweetness of frankincense worked its
magic, joining with the peppermint oil she’d applied earlier to remove as
much of the headache as possible.
“This day may kill me, but at least I don’t look terrible.” Her reflection
mocked the statement.
