As the sun settled behind the tree-line, adding a pleasant cool breeze
through her open windows, Viv Stone typed The End on novel one
hundred. She slammed closed the lid of her computer, fingering the lifted
edge of one of the stickers that adorned the cover. The sky was an array of
orange, yellow, and navy with a lingering haze of gray from afternoon
storms that, usually abated by mid-October, still clung to the city.

On a tall stretch, she pulled the length of her copper hair free from the
ponytail that kept all but her bangs—in need of a trim—from falling into
her moss green eyes while she’d typed. She sighed into the freedom of it,
into the joy of entering those final words and sending her rough sketch to
her lifelong editor, where it would be scrubbed into a masterpiece. The
comparison to painting reminded her she hadn’t spoken to her friends since
their last adventure, and that reminder darkened what should have been a
light heart, but she shoved it to the back of her mind and opened a bottle of
wine to let it breathe while she prepared dinner.

Her stomach growled its pleasure as she sautéed whitefish, draining it
and layering the thick chunks of meat atop a bed of deep, green arugula and
thinly grated carrots. She shaved parmesan over the meal, adding
strawberries and a few walnuts. And, because every completed manuscript
deserved a celebration, she included a handful of spiced croutons. Setting
her aqua green plate on a bamboo tray beside a cloth napkin, a matching
stemless wine glass, and utensils, she allowed herself a moment to enjoy the
beauty of her plate.

A quick glance at the calendar told her it was Wednesday, and with a
pang she shook off the desire to head into town and join her potential krewe
in Illusion Square. It had been three weeks since she’d revealed herself, and
they’d given her the space she requested. She’d face them, eventually, but
tonight …

Tonight, she’d let the sky change colors as she ate a reasonable meal on
her back porch, enjoy the sharp tang of the red blend she’d chosen, and
celebrate her accomplishments. She’d finished book one hundred. Under
this pen name. In this lifetime. Times were changing, she noted, as she
wrapped herself in her favorite cardigan—the soft one the shade of the
ocean at its deepest, before the blue filtered all the sun and became pitch
black. She’d be able to keep this pen name longer, and that was a wonder as
it was at the height of its popularity
