VALE
Jamie brought the armful of wood from the chopping block and dumped it
in the circle of stones. This early spring week had been a little family
reunion and a whole lot of work. The entire extended family was camping
out on the hills above Clovis. It was a big camp, with tents stretched out in
a circle. A large campfire was being laid in the middle, ready for their
campfire dinner.
His mother was going through their provisions in the crate, and then pulled
out some potatoes to roast on the edge of the fire. Her green eyes sparkled
as she straightened. Bryn Rizza was the Queen of Vale, but nothing made
her happier than cooking for her family.
His sister, Rena, was sitting on a nearby log with their cousin, Lorenzo.
Much to his delight, she was playing with fire, letting it roll over her fingers
and form a ball.

A tall, woman with long, flowing sandy colored hair and green eyes rose
out of the earth, appearing before them. She rarely displayed her powers
around strangers, but she felt comfortable here. Some called her a daemon
or the goddess of the mountain, but he just knew her as his grandmother,
Atena. She scowled at Rena with her hand on her hip. “What did I tell you,
Rena? Your powers are not a toy.”
“Yes, Grandmother. Sorry,” Rena said, hanging her head. She closed her
palm, and the fire blinked out.
“Rena and Lorenzo. Go find your fathers out on the range. I’m going to
need to start the goat roasting soon, and I can’t do that without a goat.”
The pair quickly got up and ran off toward where their appa birds were tied
up. The large birds, in a variety of colors, were pecking at the earth and
squawked when Rena and Lorenzo both jumped on and took off toward the
range.

Jamie sat down and grabbed a stick and his pocketknife. He considered the
stick and then started whittling.
“What are you working on, Jamie?” Atena asked as she sat down beside
him and took off her boots. She wiggled her toes and sighed.
“Ahh, just a little flute,” he said, peeling the bark off the wood.
Bryn’s eyes flicked to him, looking worried. Her oldest son, now nearly
eighteen, had matured from a wild, rambunctious boy who got into
everything, to a quiet boy who avoided others. “Jamie, go join your
cousins.”
“But Ma …,” he protested, holding his knife mid-stroke.
“Jamie,” she said sternly, putting the top back on the crate and sitting on top
of it.

“Fine,” he grumbled, laying his stick down and then folding his knife back
up. With a sigh, he walked over to the birds. Finding his bird was a simple
task. All the birds were golden except his, which was crimson red. He had
found him on the peak of Vale and tamed him himself. His father had been
proud as punch when Red had turned out to be one of the best birds he had
ever seen.
