I sat up in bed, looking at the empty space beside me where Tomas should
have been. The sheets were still warm under my fingers and I could just
make out the imprint of where his head had been on his pillow. I sighed,
feeling my shoulders tense as I recalled the daunting task ahead of us, the
quest that Queen Luciana had given us the day before to break the spell that
kept the kingdom within the Crystal Wastes locked in eternal slumber.
I
hadn’t yet fully acknowledged what the awakened queen had told me about
myself — about my powers and my heritage — after my sister and I and the
princes had broken the sleep spell that had held the queen in its thrall for
nearly a year. The sky beyond our windows was still dark, pricked through
with silver starlight and the gentle golden glow of the nearly full moon, but
I found that I wasn’t able to return to sleep. I slipped out of bed and
wrapped a light silk shawl around my shoulders against the chill of the
night and went out to our sitting room.
Tomas was crouched near the fireplace, patiently urging the embers
to life. Despite the chill in the room, his nightshirt was unbuttoned and his
sleeves rolled up past his elbow. The dim light caught on his bared chest,
his muscled forearms gleaming as he placed another log on the fire. He
watched the tiny flames lick over its side with satisfaction.
He turned to look up at me as I came to his side, his face warming
with a hesitant, affectionate smile. The firelight danced over his angular
jaw, playing with the shadows around his high cheekbones and broad
shoulders. I ran my fingers through his curling, reddish brown hair and he
caught my slender hand in his own strong, sword-calloused one, easily
wrapping his fingers around my wrist and pulling it toward his lips.
“Ah, Rose. Couldn’t sleep either, my beloved little witch?” he asked
softly as he kissed the tips of my fingers. I felt a thrill of delight run over
me at the gentle caress of his lips on my skin.
“Not with you gone from beside me. Even without your fur, I still
depend on you for warmth and comfort,” I said, giving him a playful,
affectionate smile. “It’s not even dawn yet, Tomas, and while your mother
said that we should leave at first light, I doubt that means that we will
actually need to be ready that early.”
He drew his breath in slowly and then sighed in consternation. “I
know, but I’m restless. Maybe it’s anticipation, or worry. Or perhaps it’s
because yesterday, we finally woke my mother and I found out that she’s a
centuries old survivor of a cursed kingdom, whose enemies nearly
destroyed them completely and now are rising again within my own father’s
kingdom. And my wife and her sister might have to fight these fabled,
shadowy Mordunai if we have any hope to stop them.” His words all came
in a rush of agitation, and he looked to me for some comfort or reassurance.
