Remnants of Polaris’s mistakes blared back at her as she sat up from
bed. It was the morning of her 16th birthday. Her TV, which she had
left on by accident the night before, was autoplaying a video from the
video-sharing service, “WeVid”.
It was awkward most of the time when she was asked in interviews or at
sundry galas, what television show she liked or what movies she was
watching these days. To be honest, she wasn’t watching anything airing on
modern television, not for years. If she watched anything, it was more than
likely worldwide news, business advice, or— even though her mother
would not agree with her for watching such nonsense— Prophecy
conspiracy theory videos.

Without the filter of the media, it felt more natural to watch videos
uploaded by regular people on the internet. WeVid was so commonplace
nowadays, even her TV had its own native app on the Smart Screen.
Yawning and milking a stretch, she reached for her TV remote and
switched the tv off. A man in the middle of a crazed, caffeine-induced tirade
about the upcoming Prophecy apocalypse was suddenly silenced. As she
brushed her hair in slow melodic strokes with one hand, she flung open her
curtains next to her bed with the other. Another beautiful day in the flower
lands of Solem la Caelum.

Even so, she couldn’t stop thinking about the videos and pictures a lot
of the same WeVidders were showing in their storytime and “proof” videos.
Pixilated shadows in the depths of the sea, mutations found on sea life and
other creatures that live on both land and water. She continued to brush her
hair, lost in thought. If there were any truth to any of these claims or
pictures, there was a pretty good chance her family already knew about it.

There were no such things as monsters. There were plenty of large
animals that roamed the world they lived on. A long time ago, maybe the
old humans thought they were monsters. Nodding with her thoughts, the
only conclusion she could come to was that these were pictures of deep-sea
creatures, come up to the top of the sea once every blue moon. After
all, every WeVidder was sharing the same photos for weeks with nothing
new.

A couple of knocks came to her door a few minutes later. After Polaris
beckoned them in, she climbed out of bed and walked to her closet. A
massive walk-in filled with every party dress, casual wear, suit, blazer, and
coronation gown imaginable. It was a menagerie of flowers and all of the
fragrances clashed with one another, the petals never dying after being sewn
into their threads. Works only the Strom family could provide.

“Princess Polaris, good morning and happy birthday.” A chambermaid
greeted, bowing deeply. The other two chambermaids that had accompanied
her bowed as well.
“Happy birthday Princess!”
Polaris looked away from her closet to smile at the women and nodded
her head.
