Sophia kneeled behind two wooden barrels. She crouched lower, grabbed the
hair tie on her wrist and hurriedly tied her unruly, dark red hair. She peered
over the barrels to see the man place the bomb down on the steel table. She’d
met dragons before but they’d never felt the need to build bombs in order to
create chaos. They could do that by spitting fire.
She figured this dragon lacked those abilities and his dysfunction made
him snap. Although he hadn’t yet killed anyone, his previous bomb had
critically injured a few innocent people in a clothing store at the mall.
She kept an eye on him as she moved towards the open window behind
her. They were on the first floor and she hoped the SWAT team was down
below; otherwise giving the signal out the window was useless. She patted her
hip while giving the signal—not again. The Captain would have her head for
not having her gun with her.
The distraction caused her to slip on grease and rather than ruining her
new boots and falling to the ground, she kicked the barrels over. Her eyes
widened as she watched the man jump and roar in her direction.
He came rushing towards her, eyes big and unhinged. She sprang to her
feet, prepared to defend herself, when the deafening beep of an activated
bomb sounded.
He charged at her with such force it propelled them both out the
window. The blast resonated through the warehouse and the heat scorched her
skin. The dragon grabbed her but fumbled and she landed on top of him.
Her body bounced off of his like a rag doll and she landed with a hard
thud on the ground. As she wheezed to try and get the air back in her lungs,
she could only see stars and heard the sounds of voices screaming around her.
“Fucking paranormals,” an officer said as he stood over her.
She huffed at him as she sat upright. She held a hand to the back of her
head and hissed. It was tender but not swollen. Her mind was slightly
scrambled but she’d be okay.
The officers cuffed the dragon and hauled him to his feet. He protested
as they dragged him to the SWAT truck.
“The Captain won’t be happy about this.”
She turned towards the voice. It was Dale, a SWAT officer that didn’t
hate her kind like the others.
“He’ll be okay. We got the guy,” she lied.
The Captain was definitely going to have her head for this. She had
already been placed on desk duty because of a previous incident. He only
allowed her out because she had lied about having to follow up with the
witnesses from the previous bombing.
Dale helped her to her feet. He made sure she was okay to drive herself
to the precinct and then returned to his team. The patrol officers were already
at the scene and as she looked up, she could see the fire trucks arriving.
