WILDER
A KID SPRINTED down the high school’s hallway.
“Walk,” I called from my classroom as he streaked past my door.
He slowed to a walk for five steps. Then his shoes pounded on the floor
again as he kept on jogging.
Chasing him down and giving him detention was so damn tempting. But I
stayed at my desk, not wanting to deal with any teenage attitude, and checked
the clock. My prep period was nearly over, and I had one more class to get
through. Then the week was done, and fuck, I was ready.
With just over a month left in the school year, everyone was ready to
escape these walls. Students. Teachers. Friday afternoons were especially
brutal.

It had been a good school year, but hell, I was getting tired. Summer
break couldn’t come fast enough, and I was living for my weekends at the
moment. The blissful prospect of a weekend alone beckoned. Just a couple of
days by myself reveling in silence, enjoying the beautiful spring weather in
peace.

Since I’d moved to Calamity, Montana, there’d been springs when we’d
had sunshine and daffodils during the last month of school. And years when
we’d been buried in a foot of snow. This year, we’d been blessed with the
former, and I wanted nothing more than to spend my days working outside
and my evenings on the couch with a book.
I just had to make it through a couple more hours.

The stack of science projects on my desk was as appealing as moldy
cheese, but I picked up the report from the top of the pile, then scanned the
student’s work, making notes in the margin with my favorite red pen. The
introduction and hypothesis were well written and the script legible, but the
notes about the experiment itself were sloppy. The conclusion might as well
have been doodled by a kindergartener.

Next year, I was requiring all science projects be typed. I scratched a C in
the upper right corner of the front page and moved on to the next. It was a B.
The third was a D at best, and I was about to start pulling out my own hair
when my phone vibrated on the desk.
Danny’s name flashed on the screen. “Hey,” I answered.

“Hi. This a good time?”
“Yeah. I’ve got about thirty until my next class.”
“How’s it going?”
“It’s a Friday.”
He chuckled. “Are your students making your life hell? Because mine
sure are.”

“I had a kid yesterday tell me that he couldn’t do his homework on time
because he had baseball practice every night this week. But when he makes it
to the major leagues, he’ll get me season tickets.”
“Generous,” Danny said.

“The D I’m giving him also feels generous.”
“The kids are wild this year. Everyone is bouncing off the walls.” He
blew out a long breath. “I’m so ready for summer.”
