(n) the intense desire for freedom
September, Senior Year of High School
“What do you mean we can’t go? Literally everyone will be on that trip,
Daddy. We’re almost eighteen!” Raven pleads with our father while
disappointment settles like lead deep in my gut.
I knew not to get my hopes up and big fat did it anyways.
Most of our graduating class is heading to Galveston, Texas in April to
spend Spring Break at the beach. It’s a huge deal to coordinate with
everyone, so the senior class always starts planning at the beginning of the
school year.

“I don’t care if you’re thirty,” he barks, slamming the refrigerator door
before sitting back down in his chair. Who knew that a simple request
would send him into such an uproar? Me. I did. But Raven can’t let it go.
“I don’t trust those teenagers, and I don’t trust you both to make sound
decisions when surrounded by partying and drugs,” he continues on a roll.
“You think I don’t remember being young? Pas bon!”
Our dad loves us…maybe just too much at times. His overprotectiveness has gotten worse as we get older. It’s like he thinks sex,
drugs, and rock-n-roll will corrupt his precious daughters. Never mind that
he let my older brothers go on trips. I know better than to bring it up again.
“The world is much different for girls than it is for boys” will be his readymade response, inviting no arguments and serving only to make our blood

fork, sending it clanging across the table, and Daddy rears back like he’s
been slapped. No one says anything, and a hot tear rolls down my cheek.
I’ve never made a fuss. I’ve missed Friday night football games when Gus
or Allan hasn’t been able to come. I’ve missed out on parties, on sleepovers,
on going out and being a wild and crazy teenager, even just once.
But I really didn’t think he’d force us to miss our senior Spring Break.
Raven grabs my arm. “Come on Len. I can’t stay in this house.”
Momma just looks at us and shakes her head as we leave out the backdoor.
The door slams behind us and we walk towards the barn a few hundred feet
behind the house.

Inside the barn, I sit on a hay bale while Raven throws herself onto the
old leather couch in the alcove near the tack room. I have a direct line of
sight to the house to make sure our parents don’t sneak up on us while
we’re venting. I’ve learned the hard way.
“I swear, it’s like he wants me to hate him. I can’t believe Momma just
sat at the table and didn’t say anything,” Raven says, throwing her arm over
her eyes.

Does she really expect her to stick up for us? She’s worse than he is,
making me raise my arms above my head to show that my shirts won’t ride
up and show my stomach and being the first to say no anytime we want to
go hang out with friends. I take a deep breath. If I let myself mope and
