Ashlyn’s car crept slowly through the rain, her windshield wipers
working double-time as she clutched the steering wheel with white
knuckles. She approached the curve ahead with utmost caution, determined
to take it safely. Normally she loved the rain; well really, she loved
watching the rain from inside, hearing the droplets pound on the roof. It was
soothing. Actually going out in it? Not so much. Tonight had simply been
an emergency, or she wouldn’t have considered going out. Tess was still
wearing the cast from the last time Steve pushed her down the stairs
‘accidentally,’ and Ash wasn’t about to leave her there if she wanted out.
“C’mon Ash, going a little faster won’t kill you.” Ashlyn would have
sent her a scathing glare, if she wasn’t going through a horrific breakup and
if her own eyes weren’t entirely glued to the road ahead. She would much
rather be tucked in bed, playing Elysium. The fifth anniversary of the game
was fast approaching, and she wanted to be prepared, but instead, she nearly
cracked at what she considered the insensitive nature of her friend’s
comment.
She repeated her mantra silently, ‘she doesn’t know, she doesn’t know.’
Sometimes, she just wanted to be treated like a normal person instead of
seeing pity in their eyes, and Tess already came with enough drama that she

Exhaling in and out slowly, she controlled her emotions and replied
somewhat stiffly as she glanced briefly over at her friend, “You never know
what’s going to happen. It’s better to be safe than so–” Her voice cut off as
her gaze jerked back at the road, her gut sinking as her friend lunged over to
her.
“Watch out!” Tess yanked on the steering wheel, trying to turn the car
away. She could feel the wheels hydroplane beneath them, but that was
nothing compared to the headlights that were in their face. The pain was
sharp but fleeting as she passed out, the semi-truck flinging their smashed
car into the treeline.
She woke in a panic, clutching the sheets around her frantically. It took a
few seconds to register the sunshine on her face, though her body was damp
with cold fear sweat. She shuddered, shivering as she pulled the blankets
around her, trying to steady her breathing. It was just a nightmare. A very
realistic nightmare, but a nightmare nonetheless… Clutching her stuffed
bunny Yoseph to her chest, she whispered to herself to reiterate, “It didn’t
happen, it’s just your memories screwing with your fears.” She’d relived
versions of the crash in her dreams often enough that she was almost used
to it, but that one had felt so real.
She paused, glancing around the room. It felt vaguely nostalgic, but the
first difference that registered was the bedsheets. Shouldn’t they be green?
She hadn’t had blue bedsheets in years. A buzz at the nightstand made her
jump, only to realize her phone was flashing. She paused, reaching out to
