Clutching the stuffed bunny to her chest as she let out a yawn, Ashlyn
reached up to wipe away the goop clinging to her eyelashes, blinking in
the darkness. Her face lacked the salty residue of tears, so at least she’d
avoided the nightmares. A glance at her clock showed it was just after four
am, meaning she’d gotten maybe three hours of sleep after she logged out.
Not terrible, considering she usually got four hours tops most nights. Not
even five years in Elysium had cured her of her insomnia. At least right
now her body only had two years of fatigue built up instead of seven, so
there was that. She usually just made do with brief naps throughout the day
to keep her going.

She’d wanted to get some sleep before launch so she could just play
through like she was sure many others had, but her brain refused to
cooperate. It was frustrating to just lie there wanting to sleep, but the
thousands of thoughts whirling through her head conspired in an effort not
to comply as they tried to figure out why she had woken up in the past
without any proper answers or even working theories.

Those thoughts dredged through the fog in her brain as she convinced
her aching muscles to move and leave the warmth of her blanket fort
behind. Stretching and sitting up to let her temporary lightheadedness pass,
Ash patted Yoseph, smoothing down the fur of her fuzzy bunny as she
remembered what she’d done and finally grinned. As much as she treasured
the plush, she had something better in the game: Benji! If he wasn’t
throwing a tantrum, that is. She kinda had allowed the hydra to kill him by
accident. She was gonna have to do some groveling to her poor bun to
appease him before she could ride him into the sunset.

She took a few minutes to freshen up, her brain finally feeling a bit
more functional after brushing her teeth. Sitting back at her desk with a
glass of water, she woke up her computer to check the forums before she
went back to diving into the game. “What the –?” She almost choked on the
water as she saw the number of notifications at the top of her screen:
35,040. After hastily wiping away the water she’d accidentally spit out, she
clicked on it, noting that it was divided into four categories: 4,906
comments on her thread, 19,068 tips, 10,313 friend requests, and 753
messages in her inbox. She was trying to compute, but the relevant
information wasn’t coming to her mind.

What fresh insanity was this? It
had only been maybe six hours since she last logged onto the forum.
She stared for a moment, then clicked into the tips, pulling up the full
amount. She’d known the few tips she put out there were helpful, but she
