THE DAY AFTER I DECIDED TO LEAVE AUSTIN, TEXAS, THE LEGHORN
hen I’d stolen from a mage escaped her coop, I spilled a Mexican mocha
down my top, and my brother shifted into a wolf on I-35.
All before seven a.m.
“Phone’s ringing again, Em.” Noah stared out the passenger window, the
late January sun shining on his silver-streaked brown hair. My brother and I
shared the unique hair color. It wasn’t a sign of aging but of genetics, like
our pale blue eyes and white skin.

“I have ears, Noah.”
“Probably Griffin.”
“Of course it’s the mage.” I nodded at my phone, which was affixed to
the vent with a black plastic clip. “Look at that sneaky, superior smile. He
didn’t know I was taking that picture and still managed to look smug in it.”
“You’re ignoring him?” My brother’s tone was as flat as the view out the
windows of the Ford truck.
“I’m afraid he’s calling to cancel your session. It’ll be harder to do that if
we’re standing in front of him.”

“Should’ve switched off the ringer.” Noah rubbed his ears, shook his
head as if to clear it. Sweat beaded on his temples.
“You okay?” I turned up the air conditioner.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” His smile fell an inch short of reaching his eyes. “You
might as well take the call. If he suspects you’re ignoring him, he might get
pissed and cast a spell on you.”

“Valid point. Answer it, and put him on speaker, please.”
I took the next onramp onto Interstate 35, a highway I was sure had
been planned by a civil engineer who’d harbored secret dreams of designing
carnival funhouses.
“Hello, chicken thief.” Griffin’s Southern-California-British-Filipino
accent glided into the cab of the Ford, a unique blend of geography and
heritage.

“Hello, mage. Don’t even think about telling me you’re canceling Noah’s
session. I borrowed Gert’s truck for this.”
“No, we’re still on. I’m calling because I didn’t sleep last night, and I
wanted to schedule a session with you after I work with Noah.”

“Oh, good.”
“Also, I’m out of coffee.”
“Oh, bad.”
“Don’t start. I refuse to listen to your whining. Last time you put your
power behind it, and I was depressed all day.”
As a siren, I had the ability to detect the frequency of a person’s
thoughts, lock onto the vibrations, and distort them. This distortion could be
used in a positive way, like helping to calm Griffin’s anxiety so he could
rest. It could also be used negatively, like my reaction when the mage forgot
to pick up coffee after asking me to show up at his place at seven-freakingo’clock in the morning.
“Not my fault. You created a hostile work environment.” I glanced at
Noah, concerned he hadn’t joined in the conversation. The sweat now
dripped down the sides of his face.

“File a complaint with Human Resources,” Griffin said.
“You are Human Resources.”
“Then I think we both know how seriously I’ll be taking your
complaint.”
I scowled in the direction of the phone, keeping my eyes on the road
and sneaking periodic looks at my brother, who I was starting to suspect
was not fine.
