A FORTUITOUS MEETING
The small fire crackled softly, the ragged flames doing just enough to
warm him on a chilly night. He had selected this spot with care, having
used several similar locations much like this one during his travels through
the Highlands. A small notch in the mountain gave him a vista of the peaks
to the east. It guaranteed him a beautiful view when the sun rose in the
morning.

Just as important, the boulders and trees at his back helped to shield his
fire from any prying eyes.
Although apparently not as well as he would have liked this evening.
He remained sitting — calm, confident — despite the movement he
detected in the darkness just beyond the flames.
They were trying to be quiet. They probably believed that they were
doing a good job of sneaking up on him.
Unfortunately for them, they weren’t as skilled at skulking through the
night as they thought they were.

Rusty most likely. Probably a bit complacent as well.
He could use that against them when the opportunity presented itself.
He didn’t know who they were, but he could guess.
He had to give them credit though. They were taking their time and
demonstrating a surprising caution for just a single target.
Probably because they didn’t know what to make of him. Hence their
unease.

Good. He could use that as well when the time came.

He wasn’t going anywhere, so there was no point in feeling anxious. To
calm his nerves, he worked out in his mind how he believed the next few
minutes were going to play out.
He was prepared for what he anticipated would happen. He had placed
his sword against the cracked stump so that the hilt rested right next to his
hand.

And a small part of him was actually looking forward to the encounter.
It had been an uneventful journey through the Highlands since he had
exited the portal right in front of the Crag, having no cause to even think of
using his steel.
Until now, of course.
He had made it with little trouble into the northwest of the Territory.
Probably no more than ten leagues away from the Northern Steppes now.
Once he reached the grassland, it would be just a few more days across that
broad expanse before he came upon the Northern Peaks. From there, just a
few days more to Shadow’s Reach

He hoped that Aislinn, Bryen, Declan, and the rest of the Blood
Company were doing well aboard the Freedom. That it wouldn’t take them
too long to complete the passage across the Burnt Ocean and join him.
Having been in the Highlands for only a short time, there was already a
great deal that he needed to relay to them
