PRESENT DAY
VILLAGE ARNS, PROVINCE OF AMEREEN, RAILEA’S REALM
Too fast, too close, too much. Evangeline Barre turned her cheek to
evade the kiss and wedged a hand between herself and the broad
chest pinning her against the counter. Her breaths shortened, and her
heart thrummed a wild staccato in her chest.
“Please, Malcolm,” Evangeline whispered, willing herself to stop
trembling. Could he not tell she’d reached her limit?
His dark eyes clouded, but he didn’t step back. Didn’t release her. “You
want this.” His voice slurred, and his breath, laced with the yeasty scent of
ale, made her stomach churn. “I know you want me.”
Evangeline shook her head and swallowed her whimper. “Not like this.”
He leaned in to leave a wet kiss on the base of her throat. “Come on,
Evie,” he implored. “Let me have you. I need to know you’ll always belong
to me.”
But she didn’t want to belong to him. The sudden clarity hit her like a
slap. She should never have allowed herself to get embroiled with a man
like Malcolm Fairsworn. She shot a frantic glance at the doorway. The
shadows from the trees along the footpath had lengthened, beckoning
through the small window of the apothecary with ghostly fingers.
He smirked. “Don’t worry, beautiful.” He nuzzled at her neck; his
breath was damp heat against her skin. “No one is coming in at this hour.”
His chuckle made her insides contort. “Besides, I’ve already flipped the
sign to closed.”
She applied more pressure against him. “I can’t.”
His chest heaved, and his heart thudded heavily against her palm. His
patience was short. It had grown progressively shorter as the months of
their courtship lengthened. Gentle caresses transformed into groping, sweet
kisses morphed into sloppy, tongue-grinding sessions she could hardly
endure.
“Can’t or won’t?” he prodded, tone almost pleading.
Guilt, honed from previous lovers, loomed at her inability to meet his
needs. His hand, warm and moist, traversed her inner thigh—far higher than
he’d ventured before. Every hair on her body sprang up, as though an insect
burrowed beneath her skin.
“You know I can’t.” She was no lightskirt. Far from it. She shoved at
him this time, willing him to release her. It only served to fuel his
impatience.
“After all these months, you’re still trying to play hard to get?” His eyes
narrowed, and a sneer formed on the face she’d once thought patrician.
“Don’t be a little tease. It’s getting tiresome.” He jerked her hand away, his
weight forcing the blunt, wooden counter edge into her back. A hand
roamed higher up her thigh, another ripping at the ties of her dress to grope
at flesh even as his tongue delved into her mouth in a lewd parody of what
was to come.
Fear ingrained so deep it felt nearly ancient roared to life in her ears.
Panic seized her throat like a skeletal hand, choking every bit of air from
her lungs.
No, no, no!
Evangeline bit down hard enough to draw a sharp tang of iron and a
howl of pain from Malcolm’s throat. He stumbled back, spewing profanities
