The Dare
It all started when Tony Palermo, from the East 34th ‘gang’, told Lexi she
didn’t have the balls to visit Madam Giselle, the fortune-teller down on East
Broadway street. Everyone knows Madam Giselle is a crazy old lady, living
on her own above that seedy nightclub. Some swear that she is a witch, and
that she can hex you just by looking
at you.
Anyway, Lexi isn’t the one to turn away when challenged, so off we went
to see Madam Giselle. I must admit I was terrified by the idea of standing
face to face with a witch, but Lexi was so confident of herself that I dared
not say a thing to her. By the time we got to 52nd and 3rd it was beginning
to get dark and the nightclub lights were flashing in red and yellow. Lexi
came to a full stop and just stood there, staring at the flashing lights as if
she was hypnotised by them.
“We don’t have to do it you know. Tony Palermo is an idiot, everyone
knows it…” I said, but Lexi didn’t say a word, just stood there, staring. I’ve
never seen Lexi like that and it didn’t feel right. I grabbed her hand and
gave it a yank.
She didn’t even turn her head to me, just opened her mouth and said “NO!
I’m going in!”
My heart sank, and I could feel my stomach turning over. There was
absolutely no way I would let her go there on her own. As scared as I was, I
looked at Lexi and said, “I’m coming with you. We’re going together!”
Lexi didn’t say a word, she just looked at me and nodded her head.
A moment later we were making our way up the stairs to Madam Giselle’s
flat. It was only one flight of stairs to climb, but it felt like the steepest
climb ever; my legs felt heavier and heavier with every step that we took
and by the time we reached the top, I was exhausted.
The look on Lexi’s face did not change. It was still very intense and
focussed, like a true warrior on her mission. Flat 6A. She had just raised her
hand to knock on the door when a voice from the other side said, “Enter!”
Lexi opened the door and slowly walked inside. I followed, still rather
reluctantly. The room was quite dark and the only light in the place came
from the hundreds of candles scattered all around.
The orange-red colour of
the flames bouncing off the walls, together with the nightclub’s flashing
lights outside the windows, made it seem as if the whole room was on fire.
There was a sweet smell of burning essence oils in the air. Lots of
cushions were scattered on the floor. Decks of cards were laid out on a
wooden shelf under the big window. At the far corner of the room what
looked like a heavy black cast-iron cauldron was placed in the centre of a
silver pentagon that had been drawn on the floor.
