“Dahlia.”
Jasmin is transfixed on this woman. Could it really be Dahlia? The
girl Jasmin was in love with as a teenager. The one whom this curse starts

my mind, everything else frozen while the woman I am marrying stares at
this woman who is intruding. Jasmin takes another step toward her. It’s a
small step, but enough that her hands are pulling away from my own.
She can’t step away from me now. The entire kingdom is watching.
My mind changes from frantic questions to sheer panic. My eyes begin
darting around the room. Everyone is watching Jasmin and Dahlia. People
are starting to whisper. Sunette has tears in her eyes but isn’t moving.
Zander and Sabeko stare at this dark-skinned woman, assessing every inch
of her. We need to get away from the crowd. We need privacy to deal with
this situation. An idea strikes me suddenly, and without even considering it,
I move.
I relax my body as much as I can as I drop backward. My hands rip
from Jasmin’s, then I crash against the floor. She screams as I hit the floor
behind me; my head stings with the impact. Others are yelling and running.
Guards shout to control the crowd as Jasmin lands on my chest, rubbing her
hands against me. Pain rips through me, both physical and emotional, when
I see her. Tears streak her face, ruining the powder and kohl on her eyes.
My ears must be ringing because I can’t hear what she is saying. I whisper
her name, raising my hand to her head. She leans in close, my lips against
her ear.
“I’m fine, Jas. Clear out the hall. Send Emmeline to get Dahlia. We’ll
deal with this and finish the ceremony later.”
Her head drops against my chest as she sobs. I lace my fingers
through her hair, trying to comfort her. I can’t imagine how she feels if I am
overwhelmed by this situation. She rises from me, speaking with Kian.
Guards crowd in, along with Emmeline and one of the healers. I lie still,
letting them think I am ill. Jasmin whispers to Emmeline, who rushes off.
Kian announces that everyone should adjourn to the courtyard to enjoy the
feast prepared. Jasmin returns to my side, holding my hand. She is biting
her lip, unable to control her emotions.
As people filter out, I let Erik and Kian pull me to standing. Some in
the crowd cheer as we slowly exit the room through the side door. Jasmin
shuts the door behind us, and I step away from Erik and Kian, letting them
know I am fine. They release me hesitantly, but Jasmin steps in, swatting
me with her hands. I raise mine, trying to protect myself against her anger.
