Prologue

It was down to her and me, and I knew I was going to win. I stalked
through the forest, being extra careful where I placed my feet so I
wouldn’t step in the wrong place and give away my position.
I decided to pause in between two trees. I heard birds being disturbed to
the east, so I turned on my heel and started to walk that way but stopped
immediately. There was a shift in the ground level, and I was at a
disadvantage by being lower.

I found a tree that was climbable and started to make my way up. When I
was about half way, I could see over the hill.
My eyes met hers.
Her yellow eyes flashed with eagerness, and she let go of the arrow. I had
no choice but to let go of the branches and fall to the ground, as the arrow

was headed straight for me.
My legs buckled beneath me as my body slammed into the ground. I
groaned as I forced my body to get up and run. I ran to the nearest boulder
as I took cover and listened. I readied my bow and waited for a sound of
any kind.

This would be my tenth kill. It would prove I was the huntress Rhett, the
South King, had been looking for. Eleven 17-year-olds entered, all
believing they were the legendary huntress. Rhett knew the others were
lying and decided to throw me into this competition, and I was easily
beating everyone I came against.
A branch snapped behind me, and I swiftly popped out from behind the
rock and let go of my arrow.

I heard the air break around it and watched as it hit her shoulder, sending
her flying back. I ran to her, and only when I was standing above her did
she speak through the pain. This was the first one I hadn’t instantly killed,
and I wished I had.
“Please don’t. I have sisters I need to protect,” she begged through tears.
She held the arrow and winced.

I stared at her for a long moment. I should let her go. This whole
competition was cruel and for his amusement because he knew I was what
he was looking for.
“Do it,” the King of the South’s voice growled behind me as a shiver ran
down my spine.
“Rhett, I can’t. She has a family.” I didn’t take my eyes off her. I watched
as she looked behind me, her eyes widened with horror to see the South
King. He was a nightmare to his people and a nightmare they wished to not
see in person.

I heard him sigh behind me. “Do it now or I will, and my way won’t be
quick.”
I swallowed a sob before it left my throat and showed my weakness. I
pulled the blade from my thigh and knelt beside her.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
