Her head was a mess.
A beguiling mess that was dearest to her twisted desires.
Would you have believed her, if she told you she had killed her brother
because she wanted to save his life?
Evelyn’s skinny legs dangled along the edge of her bed. Her fingers
played with the name tag affixed around her wrist, feeling the plastic
stinging her delicate skin, slowly turning it into a shade of crimson.
Her eyes glimpsed past the window of her room in the psychiatric
facility, noticing how the bitter weather was synchronizing with her
perplexed sanity. It had been pouring since the break of dawn. The
hammering sound of falling droplets on her window didn’t let her sleep.
And even though it was daylight now, the clouds grew incredibly dark,
creating a sense of twilight. A shiver ran down her spine when she
imagined how cold the breeze could have been blowing outside that
enormous glass window.
“Good morning, Miss Wilson.”
Evelyn’s shoulders jolted at the sound of her name, yanking her back to
reality. Her heart pounded. It could be heard in her ears, like the cheap
analog clock ticking loudly on the wall, marking each second. Evelyn
wanted to disappear like dead air, blowing through the empty spaces, letting
no one be aware of her presence.
“I’m here for our daily sessions, Miss Wilson. How are you feeling
today?” Said Doctor Fiona Duval, Evelyn’s psychotherapist and dean of the
psychiatric facility of Sacramento State Hospital infirmary.
Evelyn was silent, knowing that these people could not leave her alone
for the whole seven weeks period. They were bound to their duties to
trouble her every day. But she had grown used to these purposeless
interrogations. The doctor’s articulations and endless questions were part of
her everyday chores.
“Isn’t it a lovely morning, Miss Wilson? I bet you’re in love with the
sound of rain trickling down on your window.” The doctor spoke once
again while adjusting the video camera in Evelyn’s direction.
“You know I’m here to help you. We are already halfway through our
seven weeks’ notice from the Court but you haven’t shared anything with
me yet. I hope that will change today.” Evelyn’s fingers abruptly stopped
playing with the dancing water droplets on her windowpane.
“You’re at Sacramento Juvenile mental correctional facility, Evelyn. Do
you remember how you ended up here? Do you remember the things you
did?”
“Remember the things you did.” Evelyn’s voice was barely audible. But
her doctor had caught the confusion in her words. She patiently waited for
Evelyn to open up like she had been doing since day one but she hadn’t
succeeded in her objective yet.
Evelyn sat there the whole time copying Fiona’s behavior. She mirrored
her movements and even repeated the words spoken by Fiona in a low
mumble. But Fiona could sense something was different today.
