The show must go on.”
Nick had heard that mantra his whole life. When it was a little
thing like a wardrobe malfunction or a curtain catching fire, it was
easy to follow. But when life turned upside down, it was a recipe for
heartache and repression. If only getting tragically dumped by his soon-tobe-fiancée were scripted, he could channel the grief, betrayal, and
abandonment into a heart-wrenching soliloquy that ended in a standing
ovation. Instead, Nick was consumed by that ‘dark night of the soul’
moment, and he wasn’t sure if his return to Lure Creek was a sign of defeat
to cap off his tragedy, or if he was barreling toward a rebirth, ready to shout
“Stop the world! I want to get on.” If only a sequin-clad chorus line would
leap from the trees and sing the answer in four-part harmony.

Nick glanced sideways at his fluffy, white cat, who only knew the song
of her people, and had taken the opportunity of this car ride to sing it until
her voice was raw. Sneakers hated her carrier, and she hated car rides, and
he couldn’t make promises to her about stability because, for all he knew,
this stop at Lure Creek was just a temporary landing.

His grandparents owned a house in the tiny town just outside of
Chimney Rock and north of Lake Lure, North Carolina, and in exchange for
him taking care of them in their old age, they’d willed the house solely to
him. His brother and parents were pissed, but they’d also been no help in
those final years. Last week, Nick was ready to sell the place to save his
relationship, but today he was grateful that he and Sneakers had this refuge.
The little blue house was part of a tight-knit neighborhood of one-level
ranchers with walk-out basements, and while it boasted a view of Youngs
Mountain, there were more than enough trees to effectively block the view.

The lots in the area were all less than an acre, meaning he could see his
neighbors. As a kid, he’d go from porch to porch in the evenings, chatting
up every single neighbor on this street and the next. His parents complained
that he talked too much, but his grandparents always encouraged him, and
he eventually made a career of flying around the country and talking to
people.
And two days ago, that career had bit him in the ass.
The love of his life had left him after six years. The show went on and
he made his next grand entrance here.
