PRESENT DAY
Rolling onto my back, my gaze locked onto the immense green canopy
above me. The leaves fluttered. Streaks of coral and rouge penetrated
the branches, the sunset washing the forest in a dreamy glow. The
most dangerous creatures in the gnashing forest were just starting to wake.
Our heavy breathing sighed through the glen.
Warmth closed in on either side of me as a rough hand caressed my
stomach and hooked onto the dip of my waist. Lips found my hairline,
kissing and snuffling my hair.
Lycanthropes could be sickeningly affectionate, particularly after sex,
and I had two panting in my lap. My body was tacky and damp, and the last
thing I desired was to feel their skin clinging to mine – but I closed my eyes
and ran my fingers through the dark head of hair lying on my belly. I
indulged their natures, not because I particularly wanted it, but because they
needed it. Grief was a wearisome creature, and if I could ease any of its
discomfort today, I would.
I’d spent the last few days helping them track down a Vargwolf that had
split off from their pack. They had hoped to treat their brother when we
found him, but I knew how it was going to end the moment I stumbled
across their hunt. Every Vargwolf I’d ever met was too far gone to help –
their eyes wholly black and their fur burned away, their humanity burned
away, from the viral fever they’d spiked.
It was a hard realization for his brothers once we finally caught up with
him.
After struggling for hours with the wild creature he had become, after
their bones and spirits were broken and their supernatural bodies grew
weary, they finally ended his misery. I stood there with them. I watched the
life leave their brother’s eyes and his body shift back to a limp, mortal form
at the very last second. I watched them grieve.
I just stood there.
This – sharing my body, letting them chase a bit of pleasure – had been
the only way I could think of to express my sadness for them. Sex was a
great distraction. There was no shortage of opportunities for it in these
woods, but I wondered if I had made a mistake this time.
We’d been tangled up in this glen for hours now. They touched me like
they wanted to keep me forever, but I wasn’t a thing to be kept.
When the male kissing my hair started licking me, I mustered the
energy to sit up. It was getting dark, and I didn’t feel inclined to traverse the
gnarled wood without light to guide me home. For all the years I’d resided
in this place, it still had ways of disorienting me. This area of the forest in
particular carried several trickster spirits.
The wolf who was nuzzling my belly – a Beta with brown skin and
yellow eyes – whimpered as I disentangled myself. On my other side, the
red-eyed Alpha grunted and leaned up on his forearms, but otherwise didn’t
express his unhappiness.
