GREYSON

Three years later
“CAN I HAVE YOUR AUTOGRAPH?” the waitress who unsnapped the top two
buttons of her uniform after recognizing both me and my older brother asks
with a smile that tells me she’d give me anything she could, including her
body, if we wanted.

“Sure,” I say with a tight grin, mournfully setting down my coffee mug
and casting a longing glance at my breakfast. I’m starving, having woken up
at 5:00 a.m. with the hope of writing a song this morning. As with every
other morning this week I tried to do that, but I came up with nothing. First
time in my life this has happened and it’s weighing on me.
“Great!” She jumps up and down, practically screaming. “You’re my
absolute favorite artist. I have all your albums including the Central Square
ones.” She laughs, batting her eyelashes. “Which I guess means I have your
albums too.” She points to my brother, Zax with her pen.

“Thank you for that,” I tell her genuinely. Hungry or not, a fan is a fan
and I fucking love my fans. “That’s very sweet of you.” I take the pen from
her outstretched hand. “What would you like me to sign?”
“My cleavage for sure so I can show my boyfriend later and well…” She
searches around as if something is going to materialize before her eyes. “I
guess my guest check pad?”

“Um.” I have no judgment that she wants me to sign her tits for her
boyfriend—that’s between them—but we’re in a public restaurant, not an
after-party or a club. “You’re sure about this?”
“Absolutely,” she exclaims with a fierce head bob. I shrug and do as the
lady asks before handing her pen back. She eyes my handiwork. “Thank you
so much. This is amazing. It reminds me of this one time when I came to—”
“We’d like to enjoy our breakfast now,” Zax asserts with a gruff yet
somehow slightly polite tone.

“Oh.” She blushes like a virgin on her wedding night. “Of course. Sure.
Enjoy.” She shakes her head in a self-deprecating way and then skulks off.
“Thank you,” I say to him, finally slicing into my omelet and shoveling a
piece into my mouth, stifling my satisfied moan. My stomach was about to
start a revolution if I didn’t eat in the next ten seconds.
“You have to be harder on them, or they’ll think you’re easy pickings and
drape themselves all over you.”

I nod as I chew. “I know,” I garble around a mouthful of eggs, spinach,
and bacon, washing it down with a sip of my coffee. “But I’m not good at it.
Suzie used to tell me that fans are fans and without them, you’re nothing—
which is true—and that if you start blowing them off or making them feel
unimportant, word spreads faster than chlamydia at a frat party that you’re a
dick.”
Zax chokes on his benedict. “Did you have to use the word chlamydia
while I’m eating?”
