Location: Across the bay from Tokyo in Kisarazu, Japan
THE FIRST TIME TESSA SAW A GLIMMER OF THE CITY OF Legends was at the
entrance of her paternal grandparents’ house in Kisarazu, Japan, and it
should’ve been a sign to turn around and hightail it out of the country.
But, moments before that, it was just Tessa and her two older sisters,
standing in front of the white gate with their overstuffed suitcases, filled
with dried fruit and probably-melted chocolates that Gram had sent along as
thank you gifts to the other side of the family, for taking care of the Miyata
sisters for the rest of the summer… and, for Tessa, possibly longer. She’d
overheard a whispered conversation between Gram and her sisters the night
before: This might be better for Tessa.

From the shrine directly next door, the cicadas chirped loudly through
the thick trees, calling her closer. But Tessa wasn’t in Japan to visit some
boring place like that. She and her sisters drank in the sight of their
grandparents’ charming two-story wood house, topped with rounded, shiny
black roof tiles.

Even though the shrine was busy with visitors, there was something so
peaceful and cozy about her grandparents’ home. Laundry fluttered cheerily
from the second-story balcony, just like the way Cecilia and Peyton had
described it after their past visit. All around the front, thick hydrangea
bushes flowered like purple and white fireworks, with a faintly sweet scent.
This was their glorious home for the next two months. This was going to be
the start of the best summer for her and her sisters; Tessa was sure of it. She
could take a bunch of photos and post them on NowLook to show that she
wasn’t hurt by her friends—okay, that was a stretch—classmates back
home.

“I can’t believe we’re finally here.” Tessa peered inside the gate, looking
at the stone path that wound around the house. “The twelve-hour flight felt
like a million years—”
Peyton, who had been just about to press the intercom, paused, her
fingers hovering in front of the white button. “Tessa… let’s be careful about
exaggerating things around Ojiichan and Obaachan.”
Fresh disappointment wove together with a briny whiff of the
fisherman’s dock down the road; the bus had trundled along the sparkling
bay, and it’d only been then when Tessa had realized she was still a major
body of water away from Tokyo.

“We’re counting on you, remember?” As the leader of the three, Cecilia
was Tessa’s idol. Cecilia’s straight black hair was like hers, if Tessa’s hair—
with a tiny Miyata-sister braid on the side—hadn’t somehow turned into a
rat’s nest during the cross-Pacific flight. Instead, Cecilia’s braid above her
forehead was delicate and perfect, just like the rest of her, as usual. No
matter what Tessa tried, she never did look like her older sisters, who were
gorgeous and nearly identical with their prettily freckled tan skin and bright,
sparkling light brown eyes that made most people ask if they were twins.
And then they asked if Tessa was their cousin, because clearly she couldn’t
be that closely related.
