“WALK STRAIGHT, AINSLEY.” Rosaleen jabbed my spine. “Royalty
doesn’t slouch.”

I drew back my shoulders, attempting to follow her order. The very act
felt wrong. A thief moves through a crowd unseen. Head down. Face
shadowed. Leaving behind a trail of witnesses who could swear to nothing.
That isn’t your life anymore. Before you risked your fingers, now you
tempt your life.

“This is a terrible idea.” A curious glance passed over my face, and I
instinctively ducked my head. “I can’t do this. No one will be fooled.”
“You don’t have a choice. It gets worse every day. You can’t hold a
conversation or complete a task without—”
“Ah!” I clutched my head. Knocked off-balance, I crashed into
Rosaleen.

“Without that,” she finished, putting me back on my feet. “You have to
learn to control the bond, or it’ll kill you.”
“It’s because she’s bored.” I massaged my temples, as though that could
soothe the fierce, foreign mind invading my consciousness. It wasn’t
scalding heat that poured in my mind that day, two full moons ago. It was
Reyna. It was the mental bond forging between a lowly orphan thief and an
all-powerful fire dragon.

My dragon.
“She hates hiding. She hates that she has to keep her distance from me.
These spells are her tantrums.” I cried out again, rocking to a stop. Felt like
someone lit a whip on fire and lashed it across my skull. Reyna did not
approve of the word “tantrum.”

“She is quite unforgiving with you,” Rosaleen mused. “I’ve tumbled
many a new rider who wasn’t put through this much pain.”
We shuffled forward in the line, nearing ever closer to Golden City.
“Those riders were allowed to proudly boast and show off their new
bonded dragons.” I dropped my voice, looking around. “They had no fear of
being killed on sight. Reyna saved my life, and sentenced me to death.”

Rosaleen squeezed my hand, saying nothing. What could she say that
hadn’t been said by every commoner for a hundred years, ever since the
new laws were handed down, banning us from bonding with dragons.
Dragons were wise, powerful beings with the ability to set a city ablaze
all at the command of their human. Such power did not belong in the hands
of the weak, the infirm, the poor, the lazy, and the uneducated. Especially
because when one such commoner was given that power, that is exactly
what she did… set Golden City ablaze.

Ever since the revolution, peasants were allowed nowhere near dragons,
but if one poor human peasant had the misfortune of being chosen by a
dragon anyway, the Renders corrected the creature’s mistake. Only two
ways to break the bond between dragon and rider. Either the dragon chose
to end the bond of their own free will, or the human died.
The Royal Renders roamed the country, carrying out option two.
