Excuse me, but these chairs are for Regency Palm residents only.”
Luke relaxed his shoulders and sank deeper into the cushioned
chaise lounge. His breathing had finally returned to normal after a
five-mile run on the beach, and his body had begun to cool down. He had
flopped onto the lawn chair near the table on which he had tossed his towel,
some water, and his condo keys over an hour ago, and he decided that he’d
never felt anything as good in his life. Man, the heat was intense in South
Florida. He regretted not bringing a water bottle with him halfway into his
run. Now he chugged the entire bottle without pause. The sun had been
intense when he’d lived in Panama, but that was six months ago, and since
then, he had been in Chicago where the weather wasn’t nearly as brutal as it
was in Florida in the summer.
He closed his eyes, grateful to have a free afternoon. He planned to spend
it on a beach that stretched as far as he could see both up and down the coast,
the soft rolling of the aquamarine ocean waves crashing against the sand only
a few yards away. He probably should go for a swim, but for now, he was
content to cool down while sprawled out on the chaise lounge.
“Excuse me, but I said these chairs are for Regency Palm residents only.”
Luke ignored the woman’s comments because she couldn’t possibly be
speaking to him. He was a resident at the condominium complex, or, well…
his great aunt was, and he was staying at her place, and he knew for sure that
the building’s manager had been contacted about Luke’s extended stay. To
his chagrin, the length of his visit was still undetermined. He grunted.
He was
still pissed off that he was even here, in heaven’s waiting room as it was
called by anyone under the age of sixty, but better known to the locals as the
Boca Raton, Florida area. He had been banished to the blue-hair state
indefinitely for the trouble he had caused his father and his family’s
company. Seriously, how was he to have known that the woman he’d met in
Panama was married? And to the owner of the multi-million-dollar resort
complex his family’s construction company was contracted to build in
Panama? She hadn’t worn a wedding ring, nor did she have any qualms when
it came to luring him back to his hotel room and spending, well, the weekend
in his bed. The unfortunate situation, as his father referred to it, could hardly
be considered his fault.
“Can you hear me?”
Luke slowly pried one eye open. Was this woman serious? Was she
speaking to him? And worse, did she actually care who sat on the beach
chairs? There had to be at least twenty of the chaise lounges scattered
throughout the Regency Palm’s designated beach area, and when he had
sprawled on this one only moments ago, over half were unoccupied.
