“Liam McGregor.”
“Hello? Liam? This is Taryn Williams. I’m sorry I missed your return
call earlier today. I mentioned that I was interested in having a mural
painted.”
Liam yanked on each of the dog leashes he held in one hand, while he
tried to adjust the cell phone between his ear and shoulder with the other.
“Ah, yeah, right. Could you hold on a minute?” He tugged on the dog leashes
again, and neither of the large canines responded. “Adrian! Rocky! Stop!”
The duo, a pair of Rottweiler Lab mixes, continued to strain against their
leashes, pulling all one hundred and ninety pounds of him through the park as
they did so.
“Hello? Sorry. I’m in Lincoln Park with my two badly behaved dogs.
I can’t seem to walk past another dog, or a human for that matter, without
each of them barking their heads off. Who did you say you are?”
The sound of soft laughter echoed through the phone, conjuring up
several images of the caller, all of them intriguing. “Taryn Williams, and I’m
pretty sure I’m walking toward you right now. Unless there happens to be
two men in the park struggling with a pair of very big dogs? If it is you, I’m
no more than twenty yards away. Are you wearing a dark blue t-shirt with a
Chicago Fire Department logo on it?”
Liam was so frustrated with his newly adopted dogs that he had to
look down at his chest to answer her question. “As a matter of fact, I am.” He
disconnected the call and watched the woman, now no more than thirty feet
away, approach him. She appeared to have just completed a run as her dark
brown hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail at the back of her head, and
there was a glow of perspiration on her forehead.
“Hi, I’m Taryn Williams.” She stopped within a few feet of him. “I
assume, despite their bad manners, they’re friendly?” She let each of the dogs
sniff her outstretched hand.
“Too friendly, if you ask me.” He shook his head in frustration. “Liam
McGregor.” He felt soft calluses on the pads of her palm. Her nails were
short and neat, with a faint gloss on them—not the typical hands of women
he usually met, especially not the attractive ones. He realized he held on to
her hand longer than would be considered cordial and quickly released her
palm, dropping his arm to his side.
He raised his gaze to hers and found amusement dancing in her eyes.
