SUMMER 2022
Nicole Rivers sips her soda and leans back in the old plastic patio chair in
her backyard. When she turns her face to the sun, she can feel the warm
rays burning through the sticky layer of sunblock on her skin. It’s the first
time this summer that her day off work has coincided with a nice day. With
her bare feet resting in a children’s paddling pool filled with tepid water,
this feels like the closest she’ll get to a vacation this year, and probably next
year too, unless a miracle happens. The hum of a lawnmower can be heard
a few doors down, along with her neighbor, Patty, giggling as she plays
with her toddler.

A bumblebee hovers in front of Nicole, attracted by her floral perfume.
She watches it buzz over to the nearest sunflower. All that’s missing to
make this day perfect is a cocktail and a swimming pool. Not that her small
yard could accommodate the latter. She sighs. Days like this can fool you
into believing that all is right in the world. That bad things don’t happen to
good people.

The screen door slams shut behind her as her husband, Lucas, appears.
“Have you taken your vitamins today?” He has the packet in his hand ready.
Lifting her glasses, she looks up at him with a smile. “Of course.”
He leans down and plants a kiss on her forehead before gently stroking
her belly. “I can’t wait until you get a bump.”
Nicole isn’t pregnant, but they’re both hoping it’s just a matter of time.
They’ve been trying for around seven months and had hoped it might have
happened by now. Her doctor wants to send her for tests, but she isn’t ready
to learn she might have fertility issues, and besides, she can’t afford the
tests right now. So she’s trying not to overthink it and let it happen
naturally, because many women have warned her stressing over it can add
to the problem. Besides, seven months isn’t that long.

Lucas has already started decorating the spare room in anticipation,
although progress has slowed recently. Their five-year wedding anniversary
is coming up, and if she gets pregnant soon, she’ll be thirty by the time the
baby arrives. She just wishes they were financially stable so they could
afford to lease a larger house in preparation.

Her cell phone buzzes on the grass beside her chair. Lucas holds her
soda while she leans over to retrieve it. The landline number burning
urgently across the screen isn’t stored in her contacts. It doesn’t need to be.
She’ll remember this number for as long as she lives. Her parents have
never moved house and have never changed their ways. They still live in
the same old farmhouse in the same Midwestern town that she grew up in.
Her stomach fills with dread.
