AN UNCERTAIN COMPASS
LIO CRUMPLED THE SHREDS of Cassia’s arrest warrant in his hands.
When he had brought her here to the Empire to rescue her sister, he had
never imagined she would be in as much danger as Solia. Despite his
protection, his Grace was now a fugitive in the land of their allies.
His magic welled out of him, and he obliterated the warrant with a
vicious spell. The resulting flash of light, brighter than the dying campfire,
illuminated the dark, deserted veld around them. “We must get you out of
this kingdom as soon as possible.”

Cassia slid her small, strong hand into his larger one, and the destructive
magic hovering at his fingertips banked at her touch. “If we cross the border
to a different state within the Empire, will that help me avoid arrest?”
Their guide, if one could call a shapeshifting mercenary of dubious
motivations such, was still wincing and rubbing his eyes in the wake of the
glaring spell. Lio might or might not have aimed it in his direction.
This man who went by the cryptic name of Monsoon had once served as
a guard for the Sandira King. The very king who now wanted to throw
Cassia in prison. Even if Monsoon had apparently helped Cassia escape,
Lio would never trust him.

Monsoon squinted at them and snapped the massive eagle wings he
sported even in his human form. “I hope you two feel refreshed after your
fun around the campfire because we’re leaving now. Only bring what you
can’t live without.”

“That doesn’t answer my question,” Cassia said.
“We don’t have time for questions.” Monsoon scowled.
As if the man’s displeasure was a deadly threat, Knight cowered. Lio
could scarcely believe the liegehound was on his belly instead of lashing
out in defense of Cassia. “What have you done to our dog?”
Monsoon sighed. “He knows a more powerful predator when he meets
one.”

Cassia knelt by Knight and put an arm around his shaggy neck. “Stop
frightening him.”
Monsoon looked to the sky as if begging his ancestors for patience. But
then his massive, ever-present magic eased off, a relief even to Lio’s keen
auric senses. Lio could still sense the vastness of Monsoon’s power, but it
seemed less aggressive somehow.
Monsoon’s shifter magic felt much more powerful than that of the other
royal guards. His abilities must have been valuable to his king. How had he
lost that status and ended up with a mercenary’s fortune blade strapped to
his arm?

At last, Knight crept to his feet, although he still pressed himself against
Cassia. Her calf-length travel robe and loose Imperial trousers were already
covered by the dog’s anxious shedding. She stroked his head while he
watched Monsoon warily. “There, there, dearest. This inconsiderate fellow
knows we’ll dock his pay if he isn’t kind to you.”
