MINA
PRESENT DAY, SENIOR YEAR
“Have you settled on a dress yet?” Mom asked me between bites of her
egg-white omelet.
Setting my planner aside, I shook my head. “Not yet, but I’ve narrowed
it down to three designers.”
“Which three?”
I ticked them off on my fingers. “Dior, Vera Wang, and Brandon
Maxwell.”
“Brandon Maxwell?” Mom questioned, like I knew she would. “He’s a
little…edgy, don’t you think?”
Stabbing a piece of cantaloupe on the plate in front of me, I brought it to
my mouth and chewed slowly. It was either that or lash out and remind us
both of a time when we used to like “edgy.” Those days were fading fast.
“You’re right,” I finally answered. “I feel like vintage Dior is a solid
choice.”

Mom smiled. “You’ll look beautiful, no matter what you choose.”
Sliding my planner back in front of me, I noted the Dior decision, with a
reminder to check out which local boutiques carried vintage. “It’s only
January, so we have plenty of time.”
“But vintage is always in high demand and may be tough to find,” she
argued. “And then there are fittings and alterations to consider.”
My stepdad, Scott, gave me a pitying look over his morning paper,
which he still had delivered instead of reading the day’s events online like
everyone else. Of course, as someone who insisted on a paper planner, I
couldn’t be too judgy.

“I’ll make some calls today and set up a few appointments,” I said,
noting it in my planner. “Happy?”
Mom smirked. “Very.”
“Honestly, don’t you have better things to do than worry about my prom
dress?”
That earned me a narrow-eyed warning. “You’ll thank me later.”
“So, what do you have planned for today?” I asked, popping a
blackberry into my mouth. “Let me guess. Another tough day getting
pampered at the spa?”
“You’re awfully sassy this morning,” she said. “What’s gotten into
you?”

I shrugged and pushed a strawberry around my plate. I certainly wasn’t
going to tell her the truth. That I was running on four hours of sleep after
having another dream about him that had me waking up in tears and a cold
sweat.
“Just didn’t sleep very well,” I admitted at least a half truth. “There’s so
much going on. I mean it’s the last half of my senior year. I have
cheerleading, volunteering, prom, and we haven’t even decided on what
we’re doing for spring break.”

“You haven’t decided on spring break?” She gaped at me. “It’s January,
Mina. That should have been planned months ago.”
My skin prickled with irritation. “I realize that, Mother, but I’ve been
slammed.”
She glanced up at me, brow raised, indicating she didn’t approve of my
tone, but I didn’t care. I was in a rare mood this morning, and she would
just have to deal with it.
