I spied the attack too late. My hand reached out and pulled back. “Am I
dead now?” I blurted, lamenting the mistakes I’d made. The blunders and
missed opportunities. The false starts and lies I’d swallowed whole.
I grimaced. I’d sounded way more chipper than intended. But at least I
was finally getting somewhere.
Above, the large Edison bulbs of my cousin’s game shop hummed.
Their amber hues battled the streetlight flooding through the shop’s front
windows. Beckett Cooper, my never-again pity date, wilted. He clearly
hadn’t expected such glee. An urgent need to study the floor overtook him.
Mousy-colored locks fell over his bony face. A twinge of guilt rattled
through me at his abused-puppy-dog reaction. My cousin, Case, tittered at
my lack of social grace. The three of us occupied a table in Roll For It’s
front corner, the one normally used for demonstrations and a weekly roleplaying club. An uber-nerdy board game sprawled before us. A couple cans
of Sprite and a bowl of pretzels hinted the air with citrus and salt.
Some date…Though to be fair, Beckett’s plans weren’t entirely crazy.
Even in my forties, I still loved tabletop games. Each one was its own
enigma, with dueling pieces and traps to spring. But I couldn’t get into this
one. My mind was fixated on the rejection letter I’d received from Miley
University. It’d been my one hope for medical school. My only plan for the
future. The whole reason I’d added the word “temporary” to every decision
I’d made since retreating home last spring.
Without medical school, my midlife crisis was less like a reboot and
more like that abrasive clicking noise just before complete system failure.
Case’s phone buzzed. He silenced it without looking. I frowned at his
lack of curiosity—odd for him—and he laughed harder. Clearly, my
embarrassment provided a greater source of entertainment. His cheeks
puffed, full of pretzels. My cousin grazed like a goat with a tapeworm. A
Samuels through his father, his mother was my dad’s sister. We’d grown up
together as kids, drifted apart in our thirties, and reconnected over the last
year.
Leaning over the board, I let his derision pass. Time to move things
along. All I wanted was a hot shower and something with a splash of rum.
Or vodka. Or really anything with the word “proof” on the bottle. I wasn’t
picky. Snatching my game piece, I shook my head. The plastic figure was
supposed to be a Valkyrie, but Case’s painting skills had left it closer to a
lady of the docks. The violet mascara reached her hairline. Her lips blazed
like a fire engine. The bosom was shaded perfectly, of course.
