M A X
I know things have gotten out of control when I wake up too damn early
in the morning to a goat nuzzling me, bleating gently.
Yes, a goat.
In my bed.
Standing over me, nibbling at my hair like it’s hay.
Did I mention that things have gotten a little out of control? Well, by things,
I mean me.

In my defense, I’ve got a lot on my plate. Or in my bar glass. Or whatever.
See, I’m the manager of the Fireside Bar and Grill, Cherry Falls’ beloved
watering hole for the working folk. And it’s stressful. Ordering groceries
and supplies, managing the staff, making sure nobody under the age of
twenty-one has snuck in successfully — it’s a lot.
I often end up tending bar. I’m not mad about that — it’s my favorite part of
the job. I get to make people happy via alcohol and stay up on the talk of
the town.

The only problem is that I tend to get pretty sloshed too.
And last night, I remember foggily, I got toasted enough that I agreed to
babysit Clementine Miller’s goat while she and her husband, Thomas, are
out of town, leaving the grocery store in their son’s hands.
I’m not sure why Charlie couldn’t have watched the goat in addition to
Cherry Street Market.
I eye the goat. “What do you eat, goat?”
The black and white beast bleats at me in disappointment.
“Fine,” I grumble, throwing back the covers and trying to convince myself I
don’t feel like an actual piece of hungover shit, “fuck you too, buddy.”
I’m doing great. Great.

After a quick trip to the potty myself, I stagger out the back door of my
small cottage into the semi-grassy patch of fenced-in earth that some might
call a yard. The goat trots behind me, bleating with more vigor.
Outside, it immediately releases the longest stream of piss I’ve ever seen
such a relatively small animal produce. I glare at the liquid pooling just off
my stoop as it trundles off, poop fall out of its behind, to snack on the grass
that’s still green.

“‘Morning!” the greeting is too loud in my ears, making me wince even as I
whirl to see who voiced it.
My gaze lands on the mailman, who’s waving cheerfully as he treads the
sidewalk that runs parallel to my yard. Instinctively, I circle my arms over
my chest, very aware of the fact that I’m wearing a tee-shirt that barely
covers my ass, polka dot panties, and nothing else, not even a bra.
Pretty sure I’m still wearing yesterday’s makeup though.
“‘Morning,” I croak back. The goat lifts its head at my attempt at words,
mouth full of grass.
