Angela
Abead of sweat trickled down from my forehead to my neck. I barely
noticed.
It was a swelteringly hot day in Miami, but then again, when
wasn’t it? The important thing was to focus. My company, Angel Gals, was
about to start a million-dollar sales plan just ahead of the Fourth of July, and
this was not the time to take my hand off the wheel.
I was the CEO, after all. The eponymous Angela Galsworthy of niche
DIY YouTube fame, escalated to the big time when COVID hit and millions
of people suddenly became interested in repurposing thrifted clothes at home
into edgy fashion. It was the right idea at the right time. Now all I had to do
was keep the momentum going.
Easier said than done. I passed a careful hand over my tightly drawn up
ponytail.
“These projections are unrealistic,” I told my team. “Isaac, you know how
I feel about overpromising. Our clients would rather be pleasantly surprised
than expect too much and be disappointed. Do we need to have the talk
again?”
My former personal assistant, now head of sales, blinked at me warily.
“I might have gotten slightly carried away,” he said, his voice turning
whispery with embarrassment. He scratched his chin. “I just thought it was a
relatable reference.”
“Isaac.” I stood up, deliberately ignoring my reflection in the ceiling-to-
floor glass windows overlooking the business district of Miami. “Swear to me
you will never again promise one of our influencers that you can make them
the next Beyoncé. No, look at me. I need you to say it.”
“Well, I said she could look like Beyoncé, which is not the same . . .” he
began to protest, until ninety percent of my majority female team turned to
glare at him.
“She’s white, Isaac,” said the head of marketing. At nearly forty, Deirdre
was one of the best professionals in the game. She was also Black, curvy, and
close to Beyoncé’s age.
Right now, I could tell she was trying not to laugh.
“I promise you, no amount of fake spray tan is gonna get that girl looking
like Beyoncé,” she said gently. “Not to mention, she doesn’t have the booty
for it. You need to be more careful, Isaac.”
The younger man looked abashed. “Okay. Sorry. I’m sorry, you guys.”
I waved it off. “It’s okay. Now that we’re done with that, on to what we
have for the Fourth. I need ideas, people. Hit me.”
“Stars and stripes sportswear,” said my assistant head of design, Cassie.
“Always big, always reliable.”
“Always clichéd,” I replied. “Next.”
“Something with camo and high waists,” offered Adrian. “A sleeker style
of desert ops grunge.”
I frowned. “No,” I said briefly. “Let’s get beyond the fabric. I don’t want
to hear about military fashion themes, either. Feels too much like stolen valor
for my taste.”
